U150 Team
Another disappointing result for the Herts U150 team, beaten 9.5 -
6.5 by Sussex at Hemel on Saturday 5th November 2005.
For the second match in a row, we did not win a single match on the
top eight boards. This time we managed four draws from those boards,
and although we again outscored our opponents on the lower boards,
it was a gap we never looked like closing. On a brighter note, there
were first wins in the U150 team for Avinoam Baruch and Nigel Kerby.
Mike Price reports:-
A successful start to the season for the Herts U150 team with a 10.5 -
5.5 win against Kent, a county we had not beaten at U150 level since the
1999-2000 season.
Kent were two players short, which handed default wins to Avinoam Baruch
and Nigel Kerby on their first appearances for the U150 team. Despite
this, the final result of the match was unclear for a long time, but in
the space of five minutes two boards which looked likely to go to Kent
swung decisively to Herts, and after that the outcome was seldom in
doubt. Not for the first time, Mark Topham and Roger Gordonsmith were
grinding their opponents down after four hours play, and their victories
were icing on the cake.
Apsley was a good venue for the match, with plenty of space to move
around in the main hall, and convenient parking nearby.
