County U100 team Middlesex v Herts (Kidge Elder).
We talked this match up a bit and pressed
people to make themselves available. In the event 16 players offered their
skills for the trip to Euston, rather than Hayes. Further, champagne was
offered for a winning team, at the new St Pancras station.
On Friday morning Middlesex rang up and cried
off at least three boards, possibly four ! We duly laid off 3 keen players,
to the subs bench. Friday evening and one of our team goes sick. Back to
the e mails and phones.
Saturday, a bright sunny but cold day, saw our
team in the cold function room at the Exmouth Arms in Starcross Street.
We lost two games rather soon. In one the
Middx player was incapacitated, and had to give spoken instructions to the
Herts player to move his pieces for him. This must make best quality
concentration extremely difficult. About this time the pub cat lost
interest and wandered off. Herts then got hold of the match and shed just
half a point in the remaining matches, giving us a winning margin of 9 1/2
to 2 1/2, showing up our skills and theirs.
A delightful glass of champagne followed in
the beautifully restored St Pancras Station new champagne bar. Many thanks
for your support and enthusiasm.
Happy Christmas and we look forward to the New
Year, with our match against Surrey, at Coulsdon, on January 5th 2008.
