Saturday 18th October 2003

Our first tournament at Newberries School, Radlett took place today. The competition was divided into two groups, Beginners and Advanced. Chris Jones won the Beginners with George Wickham and Samuel Jackson coming second. The Advanced section was honoured by two guest players, Robert J. Fischer and Nigel Short who competed with the more experienced players. Mysteriously the computer says they failed to score a point between them although they seemed to be winning some games! Michael Turner came out top with 6/6 with Akash Jain and Avi Baruch on 4.5.

The first tournament of the season was held at Nash Mills School in Hemel Hempstead. There were two sections Advanced and Beginners.

Avi Baruch scored a perfect 6 points in the Advanced section with Akash Jain as highest placed Under 11. A big contingent in the Beginners section from Aston St Mary's saw Sam Deards take joint first place with Elliott Parker from Grove Road. Elliott won a playoff.

Four girls took part. Radha Jain in her first tournament was highest placed girl in the Beginners just ahead of Emily Woolnough. Jennifer Cannon was just ahead of Gabriella Beckwith. Yvette Cook didn't play but was impressed with the potential of all four girls who will hopefully join her coaching sessions.
