12th May 2002 44 juniors took part in the 2002 St Vincent de Paul Junior Congress. The competition was played as one section with Yvette Cook and Senthuran Sathyanandha finishing as joint winners on 5/5. Both are Under 14s. Full results here. 11th May 2002 The Under 11's had a disappointing time in the EPSCA finals finishing 11th. More details to follow. 28th April 2002 The Herts Megafinal saw several good performances by established county players together with some rising stars. Details here. Lorin D'Costa is on course for another overall triumph scoring a perfect 6/6. Other 100% scores were Michael Turner, Martin Cheung, Gabriella Beckwith and Chloe Velounias. The action now moves to Sheffield in July. 13th April 2002 Bill D'Costa reports on Hertfordshire's performance in the BCF Inter Counties Under 18 Team championship at Nuneaton. 31st March 2002 Focus on Emma Williams. Emma has been enjoying a successful season with two particular highlights recently. In February she played in the prestigious British Women's Chess Association (BWCA) Under 11 tournament in York securing second place behind Eleanor Hayden with a score of 6/7. Emma's only loss was to Eleanor. This month, Emma played in section D of the Bourne End rapidplay - an adult competition. despite losing her first game, she stormed through to finish with 4/5 and a share of first place. Emma is clearly on course for representative honours and we all wish her well. 17th March 2002 The Under 14s had a walkover against Middlesex on Saturday. Meanwhile at Solihull the Under 11s secured a very comfortable second place behind Nottinghamshire in their EPSCA zonal. Full scores here 10th March 2002 Herts Under 9s qualified for the EPSCA Finals after finishing fourth in their zonal at Milton Keynes. Scores are here. Next week the Under 11s are in action at Solihull. 18th February 2002 A UKCC event was held at Mount Grace School on Monday 18th February 2002. 46 juniors took part with 30 qualifying for the Megafinal. Full results will be found here. The competition was won overall by Yvette Cook with maximum points, Avinoam Baruch and Thomas Gosling were second with 19 points (out of 21). Five players scored 17 points. Of the qualifiers, several were from the same family, notably Yvette and Luc Cook, Thomas, Joseph and Alice Gosling, Sophie and Alex Davies, Oscar and Lewis Grounds and Catherine and Martin Wasilewski. Other girls who qualified were Louise Haycocks and Alexandra Withers, both playing in their first public competition.
2nd February 2002 Five Herts players took part in the South of England Junior Championships at Yateley Manor. Michael Turner and Matthew Beggs played in the Under 11 section, Alex Beggs in the Under 9 and Kaz Topham and Luc Cook in the Under 7. The latter section was a one day event over 6 rounds. Kaz scored 2.5 points (one win, three draws, two defeats) and Luc scored 3 points (three wins, three defeats). Curiously the organisers allowed two over age boys to play, one of whom Luc lost to, the resolution of this state of affairs was not known. Luc and Kaz are both five year olds so they can compete at this level again next year. Roundwood School took part in EPSCA Primary School Zonals at Bedford on 20th January. Paul Williams reports that the Under 9 team came equal second with Magdalen School, Oxford and the Under 11 team came fourth. Both teams have qualified for the semi-finals. Paul reports that Nottingham High School won both sections and were 'fairly awesome'! 19th January 2002 The Under 11 final was contested by 54 players including the highest scoring Under 9s from the previous week. The final was won outright by Matthew Beggs with a perfect 5/5. Well done Matthew! Eight players came second with 4 points. Full results here. The final batch of BCF Silver Award certificates were presented so we now move on to the Gold Award and, of course, our work for the U9 and U11 EPSCA zonals. 12th January 2002 The first event of the New Year saw the Under 14s, Under 9s and girls battle it out in their finals. Results are here. The Under 14 section was won by Chay Mottley with 5.5/6 ahead of Chris Everitt, Emma Williams and Michaela Kerrigan on 4.5 points. Emma and Michaela become joint Girls winners. Saturday 20th October 2001 The second junior competition held at Sunnybank school, Potters Bar are here. Alex Beggs scored a perfect 5/5 to win the Under 9 section. Robbie Carr, Elliott Mears and Michael Turner were joint winners in the U11 section with 4 points with Chay Mottley winning the Under 14 section with 4.5 points. Next competition is at Nash Mills, Hemel Hempstead on 3rd November. Sunday 7th October 2001 The first county junior competition including an Under 14 section took place at Roundwood school. Results here. Tuesday 18th September 2001 List of junior events added Tuesday 4th September 2001 The HCA announces the details of the 2001-2 Junior Grand Prix. Tuesday 29th 39 juniors participated in the annual Royston Checkmates junior competition. The competition was evenly spread over three age groups, Under 8, Under 12 and Under 10. The final scores can be found here. The Under 18 section was won by Lorin D'Costa with 6/6. Richard Mycroft defeated Alistair Hung in a blitz game to take second place after finishing on 4/6 as did Matthew Dignam and James Donald. The Under 12 section was won by Henry Kingston (5.5), followed by Yvette Cook (5) and Peter Constantinou (4). The Under 10 section saw a triumph for Claire Wu (5), with William Mycroft second and Tom Trennery third both with 4 points as were Marcus Beruzzo and Ben Kennedy Sunday 20th May There was a disappointing low entry for the HCA Herts North and East congress at St Vincent de Paul school in Stevenage. However everyone won a prize! Final scores here. Monday 7th May Yvette Cook and Michaela Kerrigan played for Rest of England v London Girls at Streatham. Yvette scored 1/2 and Michaela 2/2. Michaela has enjoyed a good season as evidenced below. Sunday 6th May As part of the Herts Centenary celebrations, a Veterans v Juniors match was played at Sandringham School, St Albans. The juniors won over the two rounds by 13 to 9. More details here. Saturday 5th May Catherine Wasilewski, Yvette Cook and James Clerico all played in the Essex Megafinal at Basildon and all three qualified for the Gigafinal. Catherine was second in the Under 15/18 girls section with 5/6, Yvette won the Under 11 Girls section with 5.5 and James qualified from his section with 4 points. Sunday 29th April The Chilterns Megafinal saw some excellent results for Herts juniors. In particular congratulations to Emma Williams - Under 10 Suprema, Michaela Kerrigan - Under 11 Suprema and Allan Crocker - Under 11 Supremo. Emma and Allan scored 6/6, Michaela scored 4/6. More details when available. Sunday 29th April Yvette Cook took part in the England Under 11 trial in Liverpool over the weekend scoring 3/6. Saturday 28th April The Under 9 team followed up qualification for the EPSCA final with a very good result finishing 4th out of 16 teams. Particularly strong results by Robbie Carr on board 1 with 2/3, Michael Turner with 3, Rory Scott 2.5, Rory Williams 3, Christopher Belfield 3, Alexander Randall 2, Samuel Barnett 2. The team total was 21.5 points. Fuller details here. Saturday 21st April The Girls Under 14 qualify for the ECGCF Minor Competition by finishing second in the Eastern Region Jamboree. Well done to Yvette Cook, Emma Williams, Michaela Kerrigan, Drew Kerrigan, Amy Mills and Eleanor Dynes. Report here. Saturday 31st March The Mixed Under 18 team won the BCF Minor Counties final. More details to follow. Sunday 25th March The Girls Under 18 team are awarded the BCF Minor Counties title. Well done to Natalie Woodhouse, Catherine Wasilewski, Yvette Cook, Emma Williams, Michaela Kerrigan and Drew Kerrigan. Saturday 17th March Unfortunately, the Under 11's were not inspired by the previous weeks success in their zonal at Basildon. The individual scores will be found here. Saturday 10th March The Under 9's qualified for the EPSCA finals for the first time ever (as far as we know!). The results can be found here. Well done! The final is close to home in Colindale on Saturday 28th April 2001. Saturday 10th March The Under 14 team lose to Essex at Saffron Walden despite winning the first round by 8.5 to 3.5 (with three players arriving late!). Unfortunately, the second round saw the traditional Herts collapse losing heavily. Duh! Saturday 23rd December 2000 The second Little Heath Christmas Fun Tournament was won by Adam Preston with 6/6. Just under 50 juniors took part in competition with many wearing fancy dress. Sunday 10th December 2000 The final primary tournament attracted a rather small entry of just 25 players to St Thomas More school in Letchworth. However, it was another closely fought contest with new winners in the Under 11 and Under 9 sections. Joel Ward won the Under 11 section with 5/6, Christopher Bird, William Bates and Yvette Cook scored 4.5/6. There was a clear winner in the Under 9 section. Three brothers are playing for the first time in tournaments this season and have enjoyed themselves so much that they have played in as many as possible. The youngest of the Moss Brothers, Edward, scored 6/6. The scores can be found here. So, we now know who has qualified for the finals in January 2001. The Under 9 final and Girls final will be held at Cunningham Hill School, St Albans on 21st January starting at 09:00 with the Under 11 final at the same venue the following Sunday. Sunday 26th November 2000 The fifth primary tournament of the season was held in Potters Bar. Final scores here. Michael Turner moved up from the Under 9s to play in the Under 11s...and won with 6/6. So Michael achieves a remarkable double having won both sections this year with maximum points. Well done! He is also the first boy to win the U-11 section this season. Dominic Jowers and Jenk Kilich were runners up in the Under 11 section with Eliz Kilich and Lucy Preston as the Girls winners with Eleanor Dynes runner-up. Eliz has come from nowhere and has impressed the Herts coaches with her progress. Rory Scott won the Under 9 section with 6/6 with Edward Davis as runner up. Sophie Davies won the Girls section with Laura Walsh second. So Michael Turner takes over the lead from Yvette Cook in the Herts Junior Grand Prix. Yvette was playing in the Southern Counties Girls competition in Leatherhead. It promises to be a tough battle in the remaining competitions. Saturday 25th November 2000 Herts Grand Prix details and current scores added to site. Sunday 19th November 2000 Four Little Heath Juniors took part in the Basildon London Junior Qualifier. Catherine Wasilewski played in the Open / Under 18 section and did well to score 2/6 against generally higher graded opposition. Yvette Cook played in the Under 12 section and scored 4/6 - for the third time in London Qualifiers this season. Nishil Shah played in the Under 12 section as well. Nishil has already qualified for the Under 10 Major so stepped up to obtain some valuable experience. He scored 1.5/6. Finally, Luc Cook came second in the Under 6 section (out of two) with 1.5/6. Several other juniors from Potters Bar and surrounding district played but we don't have their results yet. Sunday 12th November 2000 It was a case of business as usual for Yvette Cook at the Ashfield School Primary Tournament. Yvette clocked up her second 6/6 and her third primary tournament win. Allan Crocker was runner up in the Under 11 section. Michael Turner stormed his way to a perfect 6/6 in the Under 9 section. Well done! Only four girls participated, Lucy Preston won the Girls' section with Sophie Davies and Laura Griffiths joint runners up. Edward Davis was runner up in the Under 9 section. A special mention must go to Luc Cook who won two games - nothing special in scoring 2.5/6 - except that he is just 4 years old. So, on now to Sunny Bank School in Potters Bar where we hope to have a big local turnout on 26th November. Sunday 5th November 2000 The third primary tournament at Nash Mills School, Hemel Hempstead saw a double triumph for the Carr family. Celia stormed to an impressive 6/6 in a strong Under 11 section. Raymond Persaud (5/6) was runner up and won the Boy's section with Thomas Braggins runner-up (4.5). Four girls, Drew Kerrigan, Michaela Kerrigan, Emma Williams and Yvette Cook tied for runner up in the Girls section on 4/6. In the Under 9 section Robbie Carr underlined his class by winning with 6/6. Runner up was Michael Turner with 5/6. 59 juniors took part. Click here for the final scores. Saturday 4th November 2000 Herts U-14s played against Middlesex at Ladbrooke School, Potters Bar. Herts won the first round by 8.5 to 3.5 but lost the second round by 6.5 to 5.5. The overall score was 14 to 10 in favour of Herts. Sunday 15th October 2000 The second primary tournament saw more of the same from the Roundwood competition. Michael Turner won the under-9 section with 4.5/6 with Yvette Cook winning the under-11 section with 6/6 and Emma Williams second with 5/6. Sunday 8th October 2000 Three Herts juniors played in the Bedford Junior Open, a London Junior Qualifier. The star performance come from Nishil Shah. Sunday 1st October 2000 The first primary tournament of the season was held at Roundwood school. The under-9 section was won by Michael Turner with 6/6. The under-11 section winner was Yvette Cook with 5.5./6, Emma Williams was runner up on 5/6 and was also unbeaten. Allan Crocker was top boy with 4.5/6. Click here for the final results.
