The Capel, Burn and Bunce Cups (also known as the Hertfordshire Closed Championships - now in their 89th year) took place at Rothamsted Experimental Station, Rothamsted on the 7th and 8th October 2006 - the same venue as for the last few years.

17 players originally entered: 7 in the Capel, 2 in the Burn and 8 in the Bunce.  It was decided to run the tournament like a European-style Swiss, with everyone competing in the same section.

The Capel Cup (Open) was deservedly won by Phil Bonafont of Hemel Hempstead, with an unbeaten 4 points out of 5.  This was his first victory: many congratulations to him.  He came ahead of 4 previous winners with a combined total of 16 previous victories between them!

The Burn Cup (Under 160) was well won by Ian Mutton, who even scored a victory over a Capel Cup player.  The tiebreak between him and Barry Morris was split on sum of progressive scores.

The Bunce Cup was won by David Willsher, after a break of some years from competitive chess: many congratulations to him.

Many thanks to:-

Peter Tuck, for providing the venue, helping to lift and shift chairs and tables, and still having the strength to pull a fair few pints of good beer.

Jeremy Fraser-Mitchell, for doing the draw  and providing the results on which this report is based.

Steve Law, for providing refreshments, much good advice and moral support.

To all the competitors, for playing in such a good-natured, fair-minded way: not one dispute occurred all weekend!

This competition will almost certainly occur at the same time next year; why not put it in your diaries now?
